To, Robert Forward 3rd,
Brother of Justin,

Dear Grandson,

Further to our many conversations re: the new name for your “Band,” – it will from here on in be known as “Spring Var.”

Let me explain – in years past and possibly even now in some areas, men went into the woods, (country) to cut wood for the coming winter season (fire wood that is). The vast majority of this wood (timber) was “Fir,” the legitimate name as it is today and always was. However being N.F.L.Ders, it was corrupted to “Var.” And was cut in the spring of the year, thus – “Spring Var.”

Let me explain the process. - - - These trees were cut down mostly by “axe,” – (before chain saws.). They were then “Shived out,” “limbed,” (the branches cut off) about half ways between the Butt and the top, the remaining “limbs” “Branches” that were left on the tree has the effect of drying the actual tree, making it, “the tree” “dry out,” and much more suitable for burning.

When fall arrived (autumn) and the trees were Dry, the owners of said trees (Spring Var), would go back to their “patch” of wood and complete “shiving out” the remainder of the trees, completing the task by piling it until first frost & snow. At that time late fall & winter the wood was hauled out to be cut up for the “stove” and assuring the family of a warm house over the long winter.

This pretty well completes the description of the very colourful name “Spring Var.” I must however follow up by telling you that not all firewood was processed in this manner. Most people (mostly men) simply got up early in the winter mornings (Tackled) the Horse (Harnessed) it, and went in the woods, cut their load of wood and was home by one or two pm with their wood. But that’s a more simple process for getting firewood and has nothing to do with SPRING VAR.

May I suggest you have the pertinent part of this letter typed and many inexpensive copies made so that you can pass out a few before each performance. It’s probably a reasonably good description of the subject at hand. I. E. – (Spring Var.)

Have fun with it, after all its old History.
